With all the superbugs going around, like strep, MRSA, bird flu, etc… What can we do? The best defense is to build a strong and healthy immune system. You already know you need a good multiple as well as supplementation with vitamin C and zinc.

Research is starting to lean towards herbs that support the immune system.

Garlic is one of the Top Herbs to use to boost your immune system. Onions, Garlic and Ginger all provide cancer protection, so add them in for flavorings when cooking.
Selenium- a mineral found in the soil may substantially slash your risk for prostate, colon, and lung cancer. Studies have found that selenium may lower your several types of cancer. Good sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, brewer’s yeast, broccoli, cabbages, GARLIC, mushrooms, radishes, and seafood. Getting selenium from foods source is best.

Vitamin B-6 helps convert 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5HTP) into the mood chemical serotonin, and it also helps in making dopamine. “These are big mood and alertness chemicals,” he says. Aim for roughly 2 to 10 milligrams a day if you supplement. B-6-rich foods include bell peppers, cranberries, turnip greens, cauliflower, GARLIC, tuna, mustard greens, and kale.

Garlic (Allium sativum) has been shown to help prevent atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), perhaps by reducing the ability of platelets to stick together.30 This can result in an increase in the tendency toward bleeding.31 Standardized extracts have, on rare occasions, been associated with bleeding in people.32 Garlic extracts have also been associated with two human cases of increased warfarin activity.33 The extracts were not definitively shown to be the cause of the problem. People taking warfarin should consult with a doctor before taking products containing standardized extracts of garlic or eating more than one clove of garlic daily.

Olive Oil and the Heart Connection

Olive oil is a triacylgylceride made up of three different types of fatty acids. Studies have suggested that olive oil decreases rates of cardiovascular disease and cancer. It is not clear if any single component of the oil is responsible for its many health benefits or if it is the combination of olive oil and the consumption of fish on a regular basis (which is an essential part of the Mediterranean diet) that makes the difference.

Extra virgin olive oil is one of the few oils that can be eaten without any form of chemical processing whatsoever. Fresh pressed olive oil can be eaten immediately and still retain the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, natural flavors and other nutritious products of the ripe olive fruit.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the monounsaturated fat in olive oil may help reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease. This has led to a discussion for the need to redefine food labels.

The FDA found ‘limited but not conclusive evidence’ to support the claim that as long as people do not increase the number of calories they take in on a daily basis, then they reduce their risk of coronary heart disease, especially when they replace foods high in saturated fat with the healthier monounsaturated fat in olive oil. It is also wise to eat foods low in cholesterol and sodium. This should be combined with a regular exercise plan, cutting out smoking and limiting the intake of alcohol (to no more than two glasses a day). Eating about two tablespoons (23 g) of olive oil daily is enough to reduce the risk.

The most current statistics, compiled by the American Heart Association, available as of 2001, show that, “Coronary heart disease accounted for 502,189 deaths (or one in five deaths). Another 13.2 million Americans that year survived the heart attacks, chest pains and other ailments caused by coronary heart disease.”
